From the moment SF Opera announced this project, there was an incredible groundswell of excitement throughout the Asian community in the Bay Area.  The allure of this adventurous and irreverent Monkey had propelled a large group of ticket buyers for which this opera was their first experience in the War Memorial Opera House.  Ticket demands were so strong that SF Opera had to add TWO additional performances to their schedule!

From SFO: “The Monkey King was a groundbreaking world premiere. Ticket sales were at 104% capacity, and all 300 standing room only tickets were sold out. One in three people who attended The Monkey King came to the War Memorial Opera House for the first time to experience its magic. Our November 18 livestream drew over 4,500 viewers from around the world. And through the efforts of our Department of Engagement and Connectivity, over 1,000 Bay Area community members were reached across 7 events leading up to and throughout the run of this historic production.”
