That’s because in China\, painting has always been regarded as supreme—the only visual art form pure and lyrical enough to stand on an equal footing with poetry and contemplative thought. \nIn traditional Chinese culture\, paintings provided pleasure for the eye and\, more significantly\, an opportunity for learning and spiritual cultivation. The viewing of paintings was considered a participatory activity\, a “noble pursuit” to be shared in the company of others. But some the most important elements were the costumes. Elaborate and colorful\, theatrical costumes were exaggerated versions of real-life attire—familiar yet fantastical—and historical accuracy was secondary to drama and opulence. \nChinese plays are labeled either civil (wenxi) or military (wuxi). Civil plays presented dramas of daily life—romance\, intrigue—while military plays focused on battle scenes\, heroic victories\, and tragedies. The stories mostly familiar. DESCRIPTION:Concepts of Space for East Asian Studies Graduate Student Conference 2019 \n  \nMay 11\, 2019\, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm\, 112 Folwell Hall \nand \nMay 12\, 2019\, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm\, 113 Folwell Hall \n2019 marks the 30th year after urban theorist Edward Soja’s proposal of the “spatial turn” that has since inspired critical examinations of space among scholars of the social sciences and humanities alike. Beyond the notion of a fixed territory\, space comes to denote a series of cultural and political relationships informed and enframed by human interactions with architecture\, physical surroundings\, local and national boundaries\, eco-systems\, geographical configurations\, etc. Space provides an important conceptual framework through which we understand\, feel\, and navigate ourselves in the world we inhabit. From the notorious “Co- Prosperity Sphere” to the experience of displacement caused by colonial wars; from the “discovery of landscape” to the construction of a theater hall; from literary writing to cinematic technology; the imagination and representation of space constitute a crucial part of the modern discursive history of East Asia. Ms. Vũ specializes in the performance of four instruments: đàn tranh zither\, đàn bầu monochord\, đàn tam thập lục dulcimer\, and dan t’rưng bamboo xylophone. As a professional musician\, she has performed widely in Vietnam\, Singapore\, Australia\, Hawai’i\, Virginia\, Texas\, and Minnesota. She has also had extensive experience as an educator and served as a music instructor at Saigon South International School for over eight years. DESCRIPTION:Carleton College will present two prominent Chinese master musicians from Beijing – Chen Xiangyang and Cao Dewei – who will perform on Chinese traditional instruments including the yangqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer)\, and four different Chinese fiddles (erhu\, zhonghu\, jinghu\, and gaohu). They will perform Chinese classical\, traditional\, and folk music plus a world premiere by an American composer. Joining them for a special performance of a famous Beijing Opera piece will be Tong Shengyuan\, a specialist in Chinese opera percussion. She has also held positions as Director of Instrumental Music at the China Conservatory’s Institute of Continuing Education and postgraduate mentor at the Institute of Art and Media at Beijing Normal University.  \nChen was awarded the “Excellent Performance Award” at the National Traditional Instrumental Music Competition held by the Ministry of Culture in 1982. In 1985\, she was awarded the title of “Beijing City Excellent Worker in Culture and the Arts.” In 1987\, she won first prize in the first International Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo Competition\, and in 1996 she was listed as the First Yangqin Performer in the Ministry of Culture’s assessment of professional achievements in the arts. In 1997\, Chen was awarded the highest honor in Uzbekistan’s first Samarqand International Music Competition.\n \nChen has performed with famous conductors in more than fifty countries throughout Asia\, Europe\, and the Americas. She has participated in large-scale productions with the China National Traditional Orchestra worldwide. Her performance of a yangqin concerto at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing received critical acclaim\, and her solo performances have been broadcast numerous times on China Central Television. She has served as a judge for traditional music competitions hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and China Central Television.\n \nChen was also awarded an “Outstanding Teacher Award\,” has published a personal monograph and educational DVD\,  recorded many CDs\, and published several articles. Her outstanding achievements have been included in the “Library of Chinese Experts and Talent” and “Dictionary of Chinese Experts.”\n \n Cao Dewei  \nCao is a professor at the China Conservatory of Music in the Traditional Music Department\, Director of the String Music Research and Education Department\, and a doctoral student mentor.  \nCao won the “Finest Performance”award in the nationwide “Beijing Erhu Invitation Tournament” in 1985\, and first prize in the 1987 “International Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo Competition.” He is vice president of the Erhu Society of the Chinese Musician’s Association. Cao has published many books on erhu techniques and performance and has compiled a broad range of educational materials introducing erhu repertoire and teaching students how to play the erhu including “Famous Pieces of Chinese Classical Music\,” “Tips from an Erhu Master\,” “Resonance of the Strings\,” “Master of  Traditional Music: Erhu Recordings of Cao Dewei\,“ “Famous Erhu Classics\,” “New Music of the Central Plains\,” “Chinese Huaxia Chamber Music\,” and many other CDs. He has trained a large number of masters students\, undergraduates\, and professional performers for arts institutions and performance troupes across China and abroad. Many of his students have won gold\, silver\, bronze medals and excellent performance awards at important national competitions such as the “Golden Bell Award\,” “Wenhua Award\,” “Tianhua Cup Erhu Competition\,” and “Dunhuang Cup Erhu Competition.”\n \nCao has professionally visited many countries and regions\, including the United States\, France\, Germany\, Luxembourg\, Switzerland\, Belgium\, Austria\, Sweden\, Italy\, New Zealand\, Portugal\, Egypt\,  Japan\, South Korea\, Vietnam\, Macao\, and Hong Kong. He has held many solo and master-student concerts in Beijing\, Tianjin\, Shanxi\, Hunan\, Hainan\, Shandong\, Yingkou\, Tokyo\, Kyushu\, and other locations. Cao’s personal achievements have been recorded in the “Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese Professors.”\n \nTong Shengyuan \n \nMr.Tong Shengyuan studied at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing where he majored in Beijing Opera Percussion and studied with the famous educator Mr. Fang Ruishan. After graduating in 1984\, Tong began teaching at the Academy and also became a percussionist with the Ethnic Orchestra of China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater\, making performances in Japan\, Germany\, Australia\, etc. Mr. Tong is a visiting professor at the China Conservatory of Music and National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts\, and an arts consultant to the Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Beijing Union University. In 2006 Mr. Tong began his affiliation with the Chinese Musicians’ Association\, and in 2013 was accredited as a National First Class Player by the China Ministry of Culture. In 2015 and 2017 Mr. Tong was invited to teach Beijing Opera percussion courses at Ohio Northern University. \nCarleton Chinese Music Ensemble\n \nThe Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble\, under the direction of Gao Hong\, was established 12 years ago and has since performed to much acclaim at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, the Mall of America\, University of Minnesota\, the Confucius Institute’s China Day 2010 event at Northrop Auditorium\, the National Conference for Silk Road Scholars at the University of Minnesota\, the ASIANetwork 22nd Annual Conference in Chicago\, the Organization of Chinese Americans’ annual Chinese New Year Celebration\, Winona State University\, University of  Wisconsin-River Falls\, the Land O’Lakes Company’s Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Concert Series\, The Schubert Club’s concert series Cocktails with Culture\, the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival presented by the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts\, and the Chinese Minghua Language School in St. Paul. Locally they performed the inaugural performance for Northfield Library’s Carnegie Concert Series\, at St Olaf College\, Northfield High School\, Northfield Middle School\, and Carleton’s international festival\, gallery openings\, and Chinese New Year celebrations. They even appeared on a KSTP News broadcast for their performance during the Confucius Institute’s opening ceremony at the University of Minnesota. In 2017\, Carleton ensemble members Gus Holley (zhongruan)\, Gege Zhang (guqin)\, and Haoyi Wang (guzheng) won gold medals at the 2017 NYC International Chinese Instruments Competition. In 2018\, Gus Holley won the gold medal in Beijing at the Liaoyuan Cup Pipa International Competition. He competed with 1300 other players and became the first non-Chinese pipa player in the competition’s history to win a gold medal. \n

DESCRIPTION:Please join us as renowned photographer Wing Young Huie talks to us about his career and his new book\, Chinese-ness\, The Meaning of Identity and the Nature of Belonging.   \nIn nominating Chinese-ness for a Minnesota Book Award in the category of Memoir & Creative Nonfiction\, the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library says\, “Using documentary and conceptual photographic strategies\, Huie explores the meaning of Chinese-ness in his home state of Minnesota\, throughout the United States\, and in China. Part meta-memoir and part actual memoir\, Chinese-ness reframes today’s conversations about race and identity… Huie’s work has captured the complex cultural realities of American society for over 30 years.” \nWing\, a scion of the Duluth Chinese Lantern family\, has exhibited widely in both this country and China.  He is best known for his public installations such as Lake Street USA\, and The University Avenue Project in the Twin Cities. In each of these\, several hundred of his photographs\, depicting the everyday lives of Twin Cities residents\, were installed in storefronts or on outside walls of these two busy thoroughfares.  The resulting six-mile long photo galleries presented touching kaleidoscopes of lives around us\, inviting us to pause and contemplate.  These projects\, as well as several others\, have been collected successfully into book form.

DESCRIPTION:Emblems of a Prosperous Life: Women’s Robes of Late Imperial China (1700s – 1800s)\nJuly 14\, 2018 – June 30\, 2019\nGallery 218\nFree\n\nIn the 1700s and 1800s\, aristocratic Chinese women wore sumptuous clothing in and out of court. At court\, women’s attire was highly standardized; outside court\, they had greater flexibility to choose styles and designs that matched their personal taste. Robes arranged with medallion designs were considered the most formal. Robes with overall scattered schemes were less formal\, and robes with only decorative borders and plain grounds were the least formal. Floral imagery\, already popular for hundreds of years\, became increasingly realistic at this time. Many of these garments exemplify a fashion trend of the 1800s: cuffs and hems embellished with embroidered bands\, which in turn were often edged with strips of brocaded ribbon. \nPlease check artsmia.org for daily open hours

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the Guthrie Theatre’s commitment to diversity\, we are organizing a group outing to attend a performance of The Great Leap\, by Chinese American playwright Lauren Yee (https://laurenyee.com)\, on Tuesday January 29 at 7:30 PM. \nTicket prices for the A2 area in the McQuire Prescenium Theatre will be only $22/ticket\, a substantial reduction of the regular single ticket price.  Deadline for reservations is Friday\, January 18. \nCo-commissioned by the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the Seattle Repertory Theatre\, this play premiered at these two theaters in the spring of 2018\, and was quickly followed by a run at the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York\, all to great acclaim.  The story is bookended by the Cultural Revolution and the Tiananmen protests\, and portrays how these two events affect the lives of its protagonists.  Here is a description from the Guthrie: \nThe Great Leap \nby LAUREN YEE\ndirected by DESDEMONA CHIANG\nJanuary 12 – February 10\, 2019\nA sharp-witted new drama\nWhen an American basketball team travels to Beijing for an exhibition game in 1989\, the drama goes deeper than the strain between countries.
