DESCRIPTION:Captive Beauties: Depictions of Women in Late Imperial China\nDecember 14\, 2019 – July 19\, 2020\nGallery 203\nFree Exhibition\n\nBeautiful yet lonely and melancholy: women from imperial China were often depicted by male painters in terms of their highly circumscribed lives\, entirely dependent upon men. In some paintings\, women engage in duties appropriate to their stations in life\, according to patriarchal Confucian principles. Other paintings show women with fanciful coiffures and silk dresses\, serving as musicians or courtesans\, existing to please men. Literary and visual artists often compared women to flowers: refined and delicate\, yet fragile\, their beauty (meaning marriageability) transient. SUMMARY:The Classical Chinese Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Journey @ U MN
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDear colleagues\, students\, and community partners\,I am writing to invite you to attend the performance event “The Classical Chinese Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Journey\,” which is the capstone project for my class this semester CHN5214 “Introduction to Chinese Classical Language and Culture.” The play was conceptualized and written by students in the class\, under my guidance\, and the content of the show reflects their language learning and intercultural explorations throughout the semester. From robot calligraphy to multilingual poetry recitations\, the play is comprised of various scenes that provide a modern perspective on classical forms of art and literature. It will have something for everyone. \nThe show will be performed primarily in Mandarin Chinese\, with English captions provided on large screen. This performance project is funded by the Teaching Innovation Grant from the Center for Education Innovation and the Chinese Flagship grant. \nWe are happy to have invited the student band “Clay\,” the members of which are native speakers of Chinese studying at the U\, as our guest performers to open the show. The band has prepared a set of songs that integrate traditional and modern musical motifs\, including covers of Chinese folk classics and their original songs. \nAll are welcome to attend this free event at Northrop’s Best Buy Theater on the evening of Wednesday\, December 4th. The Best Buy Theater is located on the fourth level of Northrop. \nDoor opens at 6:15pm\, and the band “Clay” plays starting at 6:30pm. “The Classical Chinese Heritage: A Cross-Cultural Journey” starts at 7:20pm. There will be 10-minute intermissions before and in the middle of the show. \nWe also welcome you to the social time from 9:00-9:30 in the gallery space outside the theater\, if you’d like to learn more about the AMES department or the Chinese Flagship program\, or simply chat with the performers. \nIf you plan to attend the event\, we’d appreciate that you spend a minute or two and fill out this brief survey. Jarrelle Barton is a Minnesota musician trained in the Chinese guzheng tradition. \nKeynote Lecture by John Holden\nUMN alumnus Mr. John Holden will deliver a keynote speech on U.S.-China relations and exchanges\, “Minnesota to China: A 40-Year Reflection.” One of the first UMN students to travel to China in the 1970s before China opened to the West\, Mr. Holden is Senior Director for China at McLarty Associates. He is a former senior fellow in the Carnegie Asia Program and former president of the National Committee on United States-China Relations. DESCRIPTION:Issam Rafea and Gao Hong present “The Blending of Ancient Souls from Syria and China” \nFresh off appearances at the Smithsonian that left audience members at the edge of their seats\, the Issam Rafea and Gao Hong Duo are retuning to Minnesota for three free concerts in three days.  \nSyrian oud master Issam Rafea and Chinese pipa master Gao Hong perform live improvisations blending Chinese and Arabic techniques in a performance titled “The Blending of Ancient Souls from Syria and China.” Since they never discuss what they will play in advance\, no two performances are ever the same. Each concert is a once-in-a-lifetime experience\, and audiences witness singular creations that come to life before their very eyes and ears – but are never to be repeated again. DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\nAn Art as Lyrical as Poetry: Recently Acquired Chinese Paintings\nJune 15\, 2019 – November 24\, 2019\nGallery 203\nFree Exhibition\n\nThe history of Chinese art is chiefly a history of painting. That’s because in China\, painting has always been regarded as supreme—the only visual art form pure and lyrical enough to stand on an equal footing with poetry and contemplative thought. \nIn traditional Chinese culture\, paintings provided pleasure for the eye and\, more significantly\, an opportunity for learning and spiritual cultivation. The viewing of paintings was considered a participatory activity\, a “noble pursuit” to be shared in the company of others. But some the most important elements were the costumes. Elaborate and colorful\, theatrical costumes were exaggerated versions of real-life attire—familiar yet fantastical—and historical accuracy was secondary to drama and opulence. \nChinese plays are labeled either civil (wenxi) or military (wuxi). Civil plays presented dramas of daily life—romance\, intrigue—while military plays focused on battle scenes\, heroic victories\, and tragedies. The stories mostly familiar.
