SUMMARY:Jizi 姬子: Journey of the Spirit @ Weisman Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Weisman Art Museum (WAM) will present the exhibition “JIZI: Journey of the Spirit\,” a memorial retrospective presentation at the work of Chinese artist\, Jizi (1941-2015). Curated with the artist’s son\, Chunchen Wang\, WAM will present a selection of Jizi’s large scale ink paintings and his monumentally sized (1 meter x 40 meters)\, rarely seen\, scroll. Jizi lived half his life in Maoist China and the other half after Deng Xiaoping opened China to the West. The artist’s overarching goal\, as scholar Mary Wiseman asserts\, “was to make contemporary what is authentically Chinese and to do it in a way that speaks to an increasingly global audience.”\nJizi’s work confronts the legacy of the Revolution’s antipathy to religion and traditional Chinese lifeways and attitudes. Deeply interested in the spirit\, the artist’s work contains a strong metaphysical strain. He said: “Art is not philosophy\, but art can answer some of the questions that philosophy raises. These answers are … not some kind of philosophic symbols; instead\, they are a kind of extension of the philosophic spirit.” As Wiseman points out\, Jizi strived to illuminate “the unification of the individual and all of humanity\, on the one hand\, and of humanity and all of nature\, on the other.” \nThe exhibition will run from October 7\, 2017 to January 7\, 2018. Offering a variety of related programs and a dynamic exhibition design\, WAM will present the art of Jizi and through it shed light on the complex and at times contradictory impulses at work in contemporary Chinese art and culture. \nAdmission: Free \nHours:\nMon            Closed\nTue\, Thu\, Fri  10 am – 5 pm\nWed            10 am – 8 pm\nSat\, Sun       11 am – 5 pm\nClosed on the following holidays: New Year’s Day\, Independence Day\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas Eve Day\, and Christmas Day.
