DESCRIPTION:A portrait of death told through the eyes of Mrs. Fang and her surrounding family\, director Wang Bing’s film chronicles the inevitable through an unfiltered gaze\, daring not to look away as an elderly woman inches closer to death. Concerning the film’s subject\, director Wang’s vision is unclouded by the oft-used cinematic gloss or mystique. Our gaze is tied closely and unflinchingly to Mrs. Fang. We watch as her lips recede\, her eyes glaze and her family lingers near her bedside. \nThe film\, while uncomfortable—and even unnerving\, implores audiences to witness a reality of life that is too often overlooked\, hidden or obscured. Through his observational style\, Wang illustrates the universal truth of our mortality. \nDIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY\nWang Bing\, born in Xi’an\, China\, is the most well-known documentary filmmaker working in China today. DESCRIPTION:Four Tibetan youths from a school for the blind hear of an opportunity to perform in a “China’s Got Talent” reality TV competition. Running off with their instruments and a sack of pears\, the young blind musicians flee their small village on the Tibetan plateau\, knowing it’s their only chance to pursue their dreams. \nOn a journey through snow-capped mountains and rolling countryside\, the kids must get to Lhasa to catch a flight to the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Guided by 10-year-old classmate Thupten\, who still has sight in one eye (although increasingly impaired by cataracts)\, the traveling band encounters nomads\, a biker gang\, and a TV producer who all play roles in the youths’ odyssey. When the kids face the high stakes of performing before the world\, they find their struggle to prove themselves has only just begun. Thornton China Center. Stromseth has broad experience as a policymaker\, scholar\, and development practitioner and served on the Secretary of State’s policy planning staff\, advising the U.S. Department of State’s leadership on China\, Southeast Asia\, and East Asian and Pacific affairs. Previously\, he was The Asia Foundation’s country representative to China and to Vietnam and is a three-time recipient of the Foundation’s President’s Award for extraordinary program leadership. He has also conducted research as a Fulbright Scholar in Singapore\, worked for the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Cambodia\, and taught Southeast Asian politics at Columbia University. Moy is an Executive Vice President and Head of Global Advisory with Wells Fargo\, delivering a full range of international\, cross-border\, and commercial banking services to middle market companies. Global Advisory is dedicated to being the global choice for companies engaged in international commerce. Based in Charlotte\, N.C.\, Andrew oversees offices in Charlotte\, Houston\, Minneapolis\, Chicago\, Los Angeles\, London\, Dublin\, Hong Kong\, Shanghai\, Taipei\, Mumbai\, and Singapore. This opulence served to affirm imperial power and prestige\, and also as stagecraft for the emperor’s leading role as “son of heaven.” “Power and Beauty in China’s Last Dynasty” presents treasures from the museum’s renowned collection of Chinese art\, including rare court costumes\, jades\, lacquers\, paintings\, and sculpture. Mia’s curator of Chinese art\, Liu Yang\, has collaborated with celebrated artist\, director\, and New York-based stage designer Robert Wilson to create an experiential exhibition that engages the senses and evokes the otherworldly\, intoxicating—and even dangerous—world of the Qing (pronounced “ch’ing”) court (1644–1912). \nThere will be a May term course on this exhibit\, to be taught by U MN History professor Ann Waltner. Robert Wilson is among the world’s foremost theater and visual artists. Wilson is the founder and artistic director of the Watermill Center\, a laboratory for the arts in Water Mill\, N.Y. His work has been honored with a Pulitzer Prize nomination\, two Premio Ubu awards\, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale\, and an Olivier Award. Liu Yang. Ph.D. is Mia’s curator of Chinese art and head of the Department of Chinese and South and Southeast Asian Art. A Mark and Mary Goff Fiterman Lecture.
