SUMMARY:Landscape Paintings Exhibit by Paul Kwok
DESCRIPTION:Noted Twin Cities artist Paul Kwok is presenting his collection of landscape paintings at his studio at the Traffic Zone on August 20 -September 28.   Combining the eastern aesthetic with that of the west\, Paul’s unique abstract approach in his landscape paintings has long enticed viewers to respond with their own imagination and experiences.  His much-in-demand paintings are in many private collections in both the Twin Cities (including The Marsh) and Hong Kong.  At this exhibit there will be more than thirty of his large water landscape paintings on display. \nLocation: Studio 120\, Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art\, 250 Third Avenue North\, Minneapolis \nTime: August 20 – September 28 \nMonday-Friday: 9 AM -6 PM\,  \nSaturday/Sunday: 10 AM-5:30PM \nPaul Kwok will be in the Gallery every morning 9-11 AM

DESCRIPTION:AUG 6\n8:00 PM\n\n\n\nConcert: OpenSource – Source @ 5\n\nMonday\, August 6\, 2018\n8:00 PM10:00 PM\nWestminster Hall\n\n\nThe opening concert of the FIFTH Festival of Source will feature all premieres from Minnesotans\, including song cycles by Carol Barnett\, local performer Chris Koza\, and Minnesotan alumni of our MNSong Program from the last four festivals. \n\nThe Source Song Festival\, in celebration of its fifth anniversary\, has commissioned well-known Twin Cities composer\, Carol Barnett  to write LONGING FOR HOME\, a song cycle for baritone\, mezzo and piano.  Barnett says\, “I have found five wonderful texts\, all dealing with some aspect of HOME – coming home\, longing for home\, the uncertainty of homecoming.  Poets include Mohja Kahn\, Judah Halevim as translated by Robert Mezey\, Eugene McCarthym Alla Bozarth\, and Northfield native Bea Exner Liu.’  Bea spent the WWII years in China\, married a Chinese man\, and returned to the Twin Cities after the War.  She was an integral part of  the local Chinese community.  She was the author of two books\, ‘Remembering China\, 1935-1845’ and ‘Downriver People’\, and numerous poems.  One of them is being set to song by Carol Barnett. \n\nFor a preview of the text of the Song Cycle\, visit: \n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPxhseoH7L7y2GDXJtSoYrw \nFor more concert and ticket information\, visit: \nhttp://www.sourcesongfestival.org/2018-calendar/2018/8/6/opensource

Their music sounds both ancient and strikingly modern at the same time. It is neither Chinese nor Arabic\, but something fresh and new that only they can produce. Both musicians are immigrants\, and seek to create performances that immigrants from any culture can enjoy and relate to. \nSince they only play improvisations\, no two performances from the duo are ever exactly the same. In concerts\, they ask for titles from audience members and then create instantaneous site-and audience-specific pieces based on the suggested titles.  \nBoth Issam’s instrument\, the Arabic lute called the oud\, and Gao Hong’s instrument\, the Chinese four-stringed lute called the pipa\, originated from the same ancient instrument – the Persian barbat. Though the pipa has been altered considerably throughout its 2000-year history\, it originally resembled the 5\,000-year old oud and is thought to have been introduced to China through the Silk Road.  \nTheir new album Life As Is: The Blending of Ancient Souls from Syria will be released worldwide by Innova in May\, 2018. DESCRIPTION:St. Olaf College Ole Arts presents at Orchestra Hall: The Path\, a concert-length cantata based on texts from the Pali Canon\, the most ancient Buddhist scriptures. This world premiere\, conducted by Steven Amundson\, will feature performances by over 300 musicians\, including the St. Olaf Choir\, St. Olaf Orchestra\, St. Olaf Chapel Choir\, and soloists Tracey Engleman\, Tammy Hensrud\, and Alan Dunbar. \nFrom composer Justin Merritt: For 2500 years\, Buddhist monks and nuns have chanted the dhamma\, the teachings of the Buddha\, in Pali\, the ancient language of Buddhism. The Path is a setting of 28 of these texts\, taken from the oldest collection of Buddhist texts. It includes deep statements of philosophy like The Fire Sermon\, which T. S. Eliot called the Sermon on the Mount for Buddhists. It has touching stories of the early monks and nuns\, like Bhadda\, who gave up everything to search for enlightenment. It has inspiring poetry like the Metta Sutta which is recited by school kids across Sri Lanka. I spent 7 years translating and setting each of these texts for the St. Olaf Choir\, St. Olaf Orchestra\, St. Olaf Chapel Choir and soloists. The music ranges from dense and dissonant to lovely and innocent\, from simple to fiercely challenging. A Day on the Grand Canal with the Emperor of China highlights one of seven scrolls depicting Emperor Kangxi’s tours of his southern empire in 1689. Breathtaking and detailed\, the scroll’s imagery has been meticulously preserved\, and as an audience we are whisked on a journey of land\, history and art. The scroll itself was painted by artist Wang Hui (1632-1717)\, and its contents are compared with a later edition painted by Xu Yang. \nCharmingly narrated by Hockney\, Grand Canal is both an adventure and a lively re-imagining of an era some three hundred years past. Fully titled A Day On The Grand Canal with the Emperor of China or: Surface is Illusion But so is Depth\, the film was first released on March 19th in 1988. \nDIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY\nFamed English artist David Hockney was born in 1937 his career as a painter\, photographer\, designer and printmaker spans over 60 years. Stromseth has broad experience as a policymaker\, scholar\, and development practitioner and served on the Secretary of State’s policy planning staff\, advising the U.S. Department of State’s leadership on China\, Southeast Asia\, and East Asian and Pacific affairs. Previously\, he was The Asia Foundation’s country representative to China and to Vietnam and is a three-time recipient of the Foundation’s President’s Award for extraordinary program leadership. He has also conducted research as a Fulbright Scholar in Singapore\, worked for the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Cambodia\, and taught Southeast Asian politics at Columbia University. DESCRIPTION:Enchanted Mountains: Chinese Landscape Painting from MIA’s Collection \n\n\nMarch 31\, 2018 – November 18\, 2018\nG203\, G218\nFree Exhibition \n\n“Enchanted Mountains” reveals the rich imaginations and sensitivities of Chinese landscape painters through a variety of artistic styles. The works on display showcase the colorful court style as well as the refined literati mode of pale color—or\, in the subtlest technique of all\, varying tones of pure black ink.
