DESCRIPTION:Please join us as renowned photographer Wing Young Huie talks to us about his career and his new book\, Chinese-ness\, The Meaning of Identity and the Nature of Belonging.   \nIn nominating Chinese-ness for a Minnesota Book Award in the category of Memoir & Creative Nonfiction\, the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library says\, “Using documentary and conceptual photographic strategies\, Huie explores the meaning of Chinese-ness in his home state of Minnesota\, throughout the United States\, and in China. Part meta-memoir and part actual memoir\, Chinese-ness reframes today’s conversations about race and identity… Huie’s work has captured the complex cultural realities of American society for over 30 years.” \nWing\, a scion of the Duluth Chinese Lantern family\, has exhibited widely in both this country and China.  He is best known for his public installations such as Lake Street USA\, and The University Avenue Project in the Twin Cities. In each of these\, several hundred of his photographs\, depicting the everyday lives of Twin Cities residents\, were installed in storefronts or on outside walls of these two busy thoroughfares.  The resulting six-mile long photo galleries presented touching kaleidoscopes of lives around us\, inviting us to pause and contemplate.  These projects\, as well as several others\, have been collected successfully into book form.

DESCRIPTION:Emblems of a Prosperous Life: Women’s Robes of Late Imperial China (1700s – 1800s)\nJuly 14\, 2018 – June 30\, 2019\nGallery 218\nFree\n\nIn the 1700s and 1800s\, aristocratic Chinese women wore sumptuous clothing in and out of court. At court\, women’s attire was highly standardized; outside court\, they had greater flexibility to choose styles and designs that matched their personal taste. Robes arranged with medallion designs were considered the most formal. Robes with overall scattered schemes were less formal\, and robes with only decorative borders and plain grounds were the least formal. Floral imagery\, already popular for hundreds of years\, became increasingly realistic at this time. Many of these garments exemplify a fashion trend of the 1800s: cuffs and hems embellished with embroidered bands\, which in turn were often edged with strips of brocaded ribbon. \nPlease check artsmia.org for daily open hours

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the Guthrie Theatre’s commitment to diversity\, we are organizing a group outing to attend a performance of The Great Leap\, by Chinese American playwright Lauren Yee (https://laurenyee.com)\, on Tuesday January 29 at 7:30 PM. \nTicket prices for the A2 area in the McQuire Prescenium Theatre will be only $22/ticket\, a substantial reduction of the regular single ticket price.  Deadline for reservations is Friday\, January 18. \nCo-commissioned by the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the Seattle Repertory Theatre\, this play premiered at these two theaters in the spring of 2018\, and was quickly followed by a run at the Atlantic Theatre Company in New York\, all to great acclaim.  The story is bookended by the Cultural Revolution and the Tiananmen protests\, and portrays how these two events affect the lives of its protagonists.  Here is a description from the Guthrie: \nThe Great Leap \nby LAUREN YEE\ndirected by DESDEMONA CHIANG\nJanuary 12 – February 10\, 2019\nA sharp-witted new drama\nWhen an American basketball team travels to Beijing for an exhibition game in 1989\, the drama goes deeper than the strain between countries. DESCRIPTION:Asia Colloquium: “Old Novels\, New Media: The Three Kingdoms as Medieval History\, Ming-Dynasty Novel\, and Contemporary Video Game” with Professor Paize Keulemans (Princeton University)\nFriday January 25\, 2019\n1:30 pm – 3:00 pm\n155 Nicholson\n \nThis talk investigates a classical tale of ancient China\, The Three Kingdoms\, tracing its transformation through time\, across nations\, and over different media platforms. Set in the third century\, the story began as history\, but was soon adapted to a variety of media: poetry\, opera\, novel\, painting and\, in the modern age\, film\, tv-series\, animation\, and video-game. This talk will outline the narrative that leads from history to fiction to game not simply to fix a classic\, textual “origin” to contemporary media or suggest some kind of inevitable media evolution\, but rather to bring 21st-century game and 16th-century text\, ancient history and contemporary play together in a creative and at times surprising tension. What are the ludic attractions of a sixteenth-century novel?  What is the narrative of a game? How is a character developed in text and in pixels\, in words\, painting\, or (computer) screen? DESCRIPTION:China\, Qing dynasty (1644–1911)\, Woman’s unofficial robe\, late 19th century\, Silk\, metallic threads\, Bequest of Margaret McMillan Weber in memory of her mother\, Katherine Kittridge McMillan RBL51.423 \n\nEmblems of a Prosperous Life: Women’s Robes of Late Imperial China (1700s – 1800s)\nJuly 14\, 2018 – June 30\, 2019\nGallery 218\nFree\n\nIn the 1700s and 1800s\, aristocratic Chinese women wore sumptuous clothing in and out of court. At court\, women’s attire was highly standardized; outside court\, they had greater flexibility to choose styles and designs that matched their personal taste. Robes arranged with medallion designs were considered the most formal. Robes with overall scattered schemes were less formal\, and robes with only decorative borders and plain grounds were the least formal. Floral imagery\, already popular for hundreds of years\, became increasingly realistic at this time. Many of these garments exemplify a fashion trend of the 1800s: cuffs and hems embellished with embroidered bands\, which in turn were often edged with strips of brocaded ribbon. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHARE THIS EXHIBITION

Van Derlip Fund 43.5 \n\nBeyond the Fragrance: Beauty & Symbolism in Chinese Flower & Bird Painting\nDecember 1\, 2018 – June 2\, 2019\nGallery 203\nFree Exhibition\n\n“Beyond the Fragrance” explores the motifs of flowers and birds that are ubiquitous in Chinese art. China’s enduring fascination with these motifs arises not only from their natural beauty\, but also from their cultural associations. Often they are suffused with poetic overtones or imbued with social\, political\, or religious meaning. The symbolism that accumulated around flower-and-bird motifs was determined\, intellectually and practically\, by the imperial court\, with both Daoists and Buddhists adding significant influence. Depictions of these motifs range in style and technique over time\, but are all dazzling in their ability to convey simultaneously both natural beauty and symbolic meaning.

SUMMARY:Chinese Heritage Foundation presents 'Decoding Chinese Opera'
DESCRIPTION:Soprano FeiFei Shen\,申霏霏\, a graduate of the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Art (中国人民解放军艺术学院) in Beijing\, has forged a phenomenal career in a very short time.  In addition to being an accomplished singer in traditional Chinese opera\, she has championed both contemporary works and popular music.  Her world premiere performance and recording of ‘李清照\, Li QingZhao’\, an 11th-century Chinese woman poet\, has become an instant modern classic; and her performance of the song\, ‘To be Married to a Dog’\, in honor of the current Chinese Year of the Dog\, has become a runaway bestseller. She appears frequently on national television in China and\, in 2017\, was voted one of the top ten exponents of traditional Chinese music. \nFeifei is coming to the Twin Cities at the invitation of the Minnesota Chinese Dance Theatre\, and will participate in the Theatre’s Annual Rainbow Concert Series on December 8 at the St. Paul Student Center of the University of Minnesota.  She has graciously agreed to come to us the next day\, Sunday December 9\, to present a lecture/performance recital on traditional Chinese opera.  In collaboration with our very own Margaret Wong\, she will explain the symbolism and purpose of many of the traditional movements and will take you on a journey through some established favorites in Chinese opera\, such as ‘Dream of the Red Chamber.’ \n  \nDetails on this exciting event are listed below.
