SUMMARY:San Francisco Opera Revives Dream of the Red Chamber
DESCRIPTION:From the San Francisco Opera’s press release: \n  \nSheng and Hwang’s DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER (June 14–July 3\, 2022) \nThe Summer 2022 Season brings a revival of Bright Sheng and David Henry Hwang’s Dream of the Red Chamber\, which played to sold-out audiences in its 2016 world premiere run in San Francisco. The work\, which has since toured China and Hong Kong\, has garnered international acclaim for its musical retelling of one of China’s greatest novels. Tenor Yijie Shi\, soprano Karen Chia-ling Ho and mezzo-soprano Hyona Kim from the world premiere cast return to their roles. They will be joined by a group of artists making their debuts. Soprano Meigui Zhang\, a 2018 Merola Opera Program participant\, takes on the pivotal role of Dai Yu\, mezzo-soprano Hongni Wu portrays Bao Chai\, mezzo-soprano Sabina Kim is Granny Jia and mezzo-soprano Guang Yang is Aunt Xue. Singaporean maestro Darrell Ang makes his Company debut leading the cast with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Stan Lai’s “magnificent production” designed by Academy Award-winner Tim Yip with lighting by Gary Marder that “bedecks the stage in vivid ornament while maintaining a suitably dreamlike atmosphere” (San Francisco Chronicle).

SUMMARY:U MN Dept. AMES presents Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English Program
DESCRIPTION:Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English (CLIC) \nSpring 2022 Operation \nThe CLA Language Center and the Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) at the University of Minnesota have joined forces to run a Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English (CLIC) program since 2017. In this program\, we organize\, coordinate\, and conduct FREE weekly 90-minute conversation sessions for American high school students who studied in Chinese immersion schools and international students from China. We organize those two groups of students and turn each group’s native language to the other group’s resource. Participating students greatly enjoy the opportunities to practice and improve their target language with native speakers and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Over the last nine semesters\, more than 400 students have benefited from this program. \nMinnesota Public Radio learned about this program and reported it on NPR’s Morning Edition. The purpose is for both groups of students to maintain and improve the proficiency level of their target language. We have developed twenty-two themes\, with one theme for each session. On each theme\, we have created around ten questions for students to discuss in depth various aspects of the theme. This program has moved online on the Zoom platform since the COVID-19 pandemic started. \nAny student who participates in ten (10) or more sessions in one semester is awarded a Certificate of Completion issued by the Dept. of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies and the CLA Language Center at the University of Minnesota. \nPlease note: In Spring 2022\, the conversation sessions in this program will be online. DESCRIPTION:Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English (CLIC) \nSpring 2022 Operation \nThe CLA Language Center and the Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) at the University of Minnesota have joined forces to run a Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English (CLIC) program since 2017. In this program\, we organize\, coordinate\, and conduct FREE weekly 90-minute conversation sessions for American high school students who studied in Chinese immersion schools and international students from China. We organize those two groups of students and turn each group’s native language to the other group’s resource. Participating students greatly enjoy the opportunities to practice and improve their target language with native speakers and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Over the last nine semesters\, more than 400 students have benefited from this program. \nMinnesota Public Radio learned about this program and reported it on NPR’s Morning Edition. The purpose is for both groups of students to maintain and improve the proficiency level of their target language. We have developed twenty-two themes\, with one theme for each session. On each theme\, we have created around ten questions for students to discuss in depth various aspects of the theme. This program has moved online on the Zoom platform since the COVID-19 pandemic started. \nAny student who participates in ten (10) or more sessions in one semester is awarded a Certificate of Completion issued by the Dept. of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies and the CLA Language Center at the University of Minnesota. \nPlease note: In Spring 2022\, the conversation sessions in this program will be online. DESCRIPTION:United Chinese Americans (UCA) presents: The Second Annual Sound of Spring: A Chinese American Lunar New Year Concert\n\nWorking together with UCA\, the US-China Music Institute presents the second annual production of The Sound of Spring\, a concert of symphonic music to celebrate the Lunar New Year in collaboration with musicians both here and abroad.\n\nThe Sound of Spring features a new performance by The Orchestra Now conducted by Jindong Cai\, along with performances from special guests including the China NCPA Orchestra\, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra\, Contemporary Legend Theater from Taiwan\, the Central Conservatory of Music Chinese Ensemble\, and more. The evening will be hosted by acclaimed pipa performer Wu Man and conductor Jindong Cai\, who is the Director of the US-China Music Institute. SUMMARY:U MN Dept. AMES presents Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English Program
DESCRIPTION:Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English (CLIC) \nSpring 2022 Operation \nThe CLA Language Center and the Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) at the University of Minnesota have joined forces to run a Culture and Language Integration in Chinese and English (CLIC) program since 2017. In this program\, we organize\, coordinate\, and conduct FREE weekly 90-minute conversation sessions for American high school students who studied in Chinese immersion schools and international students from China. We organize those two groups of students and turn each group’s native language to the other group’s resource. Participating students greatly enjoy the opportunities to practice and improve their target language with native speakers and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Over the last nine semesters\, more than 400 students have benefited from this program. \nMinnesota Public Radio learned about this program and reported it on NPR’s Morning Edition. Here is a link to the NPR report: \nhttps://www.mprnews.org/story/2019/12/02/program-pairs-chinese-english-language-learners \nEligibility\, Session Time\, Location\, and Contents \nThis program organizes American high school students who attended Chinese immersion schools for 6-8 years and U of MN students from China\, and coordinates weekly 90-minute immersion conversation sessions\, with 45 minutes in Chinese\, and 45 minutes in English. The purpose is for both groups of students to maintain and improve the proficiency level of their target language. We have developed twenty-two themes\, with one theme for each session. On each theme\, we have created around ten questions for students to discuss in depth various aspects of the theme. This program has moved online on the Zoom platform since the COVID-19 pandemic started. \nAny student who participates in ten (10) or more sessions in one semester is awarded a Certificate of Completion issued by the Dept. of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies and the CLA Language Center at the University of Minnesota. \nPlease note: In Spring 2022\, the conversation sessions in this program will be online. While challenging to master\, Chinese Dance is also great fun! Think of it as ballet\, modern dance\, rhythmic gymnastics\, martial arts\, acrobatics\, and more\, all rolled into one. The costumes are usually very colorful\, and many dances use props\, such as fans\, swords\, ribbons\, long sleeves\, umbrellas\, and hats. There are two broad categories of Chinese Dance: Ethnic/Folk and Classical/Traditional.
